Design Your Own Art Project
Project Description
This project was one with quite a bit of freedom, and many students decided to utilize programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, or Animate in order to create something really cool. What I decided upon was to create a stencil, I did this by using Photoshop to convert photos into stencils that I could cut, in fact my final product is a stencil of Napoleon of Napoleon Dynamite. After finishing our projects or at least being near that point, we conducted a peer critique wherein we would look at other students projects and write what they did really well or what they could work on.
Reflection
So I chose to do a stencil because of my interest in art using spray paint, and how much fun I have had in past projects using spray paint to make art. Seeing some of the work that some really talented people can do with spray paint I was motivated to try to learn a little more about it, especially getting into things like stencil making. After working on this project for a while I think that my final product was pretty great, I feel that for it being the first time I have tried making my own stencil I was really satisfied with my final product. However I do wish I was a little bit more creative with it, what i created was clean and looked good but it wasn't quite original, if you look at works from the artist Banksy for example you can see art that uses the medium while still being unique and creative. Taking my newfound knowledge from this project into the future I believe that I could start to investigate the medium of art using spray paint, and if I wanted to I could pursue an idea of creating something that is unique and good looking. In fact I believe it'd be pretty great to be capable enough to create something that I could hang in my room or something.

Letter Portrait
My letter portrait was a bit last minute, and what was originally supposed to spell 'Benjamin' spelled just 'Ben' instead. To create this project I needed to obtain pictures of random objects and structures in the environment that either looked like letters of my name, or things i could manipulate a little to look like letters. I would create a Photoshop document that was 8x13 in. Then I would simply crop the image sizes and manipulate things to create a letter portrait that had nice spacing and geometry with the image sizes.
Art as Communication
For this project I believe I met the project rationale for my wolf cave painting. In this small project our basic objective was to take notes on the concepts of the birth of art, then to create a “cave painting” that we would initially draw, then transfer to illustrator, and finally print off and paint it utilizing brushes we made. My wolf drawing indeed utilized the above tools, as shown above, with the initial hand-drawn version, the digital, and finally the final cave painting.
The question of what is art, is one a little complex to answer, but the way i’d describe it would be a creation intended to invoke a reaction in its audience. Although this margin is very general and may fit a few unsavory examples, I think that with all the different shapes and forms art comes in, the definition is very appropriate. Take for example ideas of minimalism and hyper detail in art, both are are considered art yet they are also polarizing opposites, with the nature of the contradictions I think a only a general definition of art is necessary.
Context can make an art piece, it is something that tells a story and can add additional meaning. For example an art piece made by Barnett Newman which was a minimalist painting consisting of a white line stretching across a blue canvas. It sold for 43.8 million. In context his art is actually made to ignore the modern idea of beauty, trying rather to invoke a feeling through simplicity.
Why does context matter in art? This is a relatively simple question really, with the proper context around a piece of art one can learn a profound story. Usually when someone looks at an art piece they don’t really consider the artist’s circumstance in the creation of that piece, so something that has a ton of meaning behind it might not make sense to the fewer because they don’t understand the context.
