Climate Change Project
Climate is defined as the localised weather and temperature patterns in a given area over a long period of time. For instance you would define the climate of New Mexico as a desert climate, attributed to the hot dry temperatures with little overall precipitation. Where climate change comes in is with the global warming and cooling that occurs naturally over the course of millions of years. This global warming or cooling affects the individual climate zones on earth over a much longer period of time causing them to slowly change. For instance the ice age is an extreme caused by global cooling wherein all climates on earth became much colder. This leads into the difference between climate change and global warming. Climate change can be applicable over the course of a large amount of time, however drastic changes in climate happening within the span of just a couple hundred years can’t be attributed to natural occurrence. This is where our current concept of global warming comes in; now global warming can be a naturally occurring event over the course of again, a long period of time. However global warming as we currently recognise it is an event attributed to humanity and the way we are affecting the carbon cycle through things like emissions and overall pollution thus causing things to heat up at an increased rate
So why should we care about climate change now? Well although it’s a naturally occurring event, this is over the course of many many years, like millions to billions of years that we see significant changes in temperature and climate. So when we begin to see drastic global changes in temperature over the course of just 100 or less years, we start getting worried. A lot of this has to do with humanity and our habits that have begun to change things at an unnatural pace. We have been accelerating climate change to a point where climates and their ecosystems are having trouble adapting to the change and dying out, especially really important organisms that have adapted to survive in very specific conditions that are very particular to a very acute location. As such we are seeing events such as the acidization of our oceans and the mass extinction of many different organisms. So to answer why we should care about climate change now, it’s because its our planet, and furthermore it should be our responsibility to help solve the problem we caused while we still have the opportunity to do so.
So my project was centered upon the specific effects that our excessive emissions within highly populated areas have upon the people. It was centered around the question of the effects of climate change, or rather the effects of the things that are causing climate change. We found that it’s likely not just climate change that we may be causing, but also the direct damage to our populations of people. Even worse so, poor people. So how does my project demonstrate my understanding of climate change? It demonstrates my understanding of the effects of climate change more than anything. Through the research process of this project I was really able to get a grasp on what the things creating climate change are, and what those same things are doing to us. Furthermore the project really demonstrates some of the major issues we are creating that are being ignored even with the atrocious aftermath right under our noses in some cases.
The largest issue or area of growth I ran into with this project was certainly the time management and organization piece. There were a lot of things that I should've figured out from the get-go to keep me on track and productive that I didn’t. So I ran into a situation where I had to get a lot of my project done in the last week or so till exhibition. Furthermore both my partner and I took way too much time focusing on a piece of our project that was arguably unimportant. That being the actual model of our lung, we ended up going through like three different design processes for the lung that took a bunch of time for each one, only to scrap it and have to go through the process of materials gathering, designing, and creating yet another lung. Overall I had a really strong start to this project and I was super dialed and realistic, but due to some of my bad management skills the end product didn’t end up being great. So moving into similar projects in the future, especially projects with that same level of freedom, I will really need to focus on maintaining structure with regards to time management, and think about the end goal.
An issue that I’ve found in the past working with groupmates, has always been strife between individuals due to a lack of communication. An all too common story is where one group member feels like they did all the work while another groupmate might feel like they were robbed of the opportunity to help with the project. So as such, I tried to make very intentionally emphasis on my communication skills with my groupmate. For example I tried to make sure we had a very specific idea of the distribution of responsibility between the two of us, like he would take care of most of the building aspect of the model lung while I would take care of the more research and information esque process. Or trying to frequently check in to make sure he felt ok with the distribution of things and what he was doing. I think my success here was creating a product that we could both take ownership of despite its shortcomings. We both put our work into this project and the fruits are more or less the result of both of our efforts.
